Laser-cut artwork captures the energy of cities

Skyscrapers, clean lines and expanses of glass are just a few of the things that come to mind when imagining a city. French artist Thomas Canto combines all of these qualities in his latest work to convey the energy and rhythm of the modern metropolis. Titled Intersections , this dazzling piece presents an abstract rendering of urban spaces as a living entity.
To create this dynamic work, Canto used a mix of materials including laser-cut fibers, paint and silver plating. This gives Intersections a three-dimensional, iridescent quality reminiscent of its original inspiration. The top metal layer, for example, features numerous cutouts and geometric lines reminiscent of the sleek designs of contemporary architecture. Through the perforations we can see an iridescent blue-pink layer - perhaps meant to reflect the sky. "By breaking away from the traditional framework of the canvas, the artist integrates the dimension of temporality in a different way", explains Canto's artist statement. "Combining spatial reorganization and temporal reorganization, it draws its inspiration from the interior and exterior spaces with which it associates itself."
Intersections is part of Canto's ongoing series, Structural Reflections, which explores cities through abstract interpretations. “These works represent a vision of infinite rhythms, perspectives and visual harmony,” explains the project statement. "These are sensations that anyone can feel when experiencing the geometric constructions that make up the megacities of the world." Rather than offering a still image of urban spaces, Intersections presents a multi-layered view that vibrates with the same energy you would feel walking through a bustling downtown.
